Types of Burn Injuries
In medical contexts, burn injuries are categorized in degrees. The higher the degree, the worse the burn injury will be. The degree of your burn injury is important for your case because a larger sum of compensation will be more easily justified if your burn injury severity is high.
Burn injuries are typically one of these three degrees:
- First-degree: A first-degree burn is mild and does not cause permanent damage. It can be treated with in-home first aid like a sanitized compress and painkillers. Typically, a first-degree burn will not justify a claim or lawsuit unless an infant suffered it.
- Second-degree: A second-degree burn is a moderate burn that can cause severe pain and debilitation, depending on where the burn occurred and how soon urgent medical care can be administered. With proper medical care, though, a second-degree burn should not cause permanent harm.
- Third-degree: A third-degree burn is a severe burn that requires emergency medical attention. It is life-threatening, will likely cause permanent scarring, and could cause a severe infection if extended hospitalization is not used to treat the patient. Most burn injury claims are filed after someone suffers a third-degree burn.
Fourth-degree burns – and even fifth- and sixth-degree burns – exist but they are far more likely to cause a fatality, even when emergency medical care is administered. As such, fourth-degree burns and worse are often the subjects of a wrongful death claim, not a burn injury claim, per se.
Causes of Burn Injuries
Our law firm can investigate the circumstances of your burn injury to determine its cause. Furthermore, we want to know who is responsible for that cause or who is the liable party. By pinpointing liability and backing that with convincing evidence, we will be better equipped to manage your claim and pursue all the compensation that you are owed.
Three common causes of burn injuries include:
- Fire: Exposure to open flames will cause a burn injury in an instant. Many burn injury cases involving flames or raging fires involve a defective product. For example, in recent years, many consumers have filed claims against the makers of electronic hoverboards, which have been known to burst into flames without warning.
- Hot surfaces: Touching an incredibly hot surface can cause a severe burn injury, sometimes just as quickly as exposure to open flames. Again, defective products are often at the center of such burn injury claims, such as if an electrical appliance overheats with regular use.
- Unsafe chemical substances: Using an unsafe chemical product can expose you to dangerous substances that cause tissue damage similar to a burn. For example, some household cleaners can be caustic enough to cause a burn injury with just a minor exposure.
