Calhoun, KS (April 16, 2024) – Two people were killed after a single-vehicle accident in the Calhoun area on Monday, April 15. The deadly crash occurred that night around 6 p.m. on K-161 NB near County Road BB in Cheyenne County. A 2007 Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by 76-year-old Diana R. Witcher of Atwood was traveling northbound on the highway at the time of the incident.
The passenger-side tires of the truck left the roadway and entered the ditch before the driver re-entered the highway. The pickup crossed all lanes where it entered the west ditch and began to turn sideways. The truck overturned onto its roof. Both Witcher and her passenger, 77-year-old Donald R. Witcher also from Atwood, were transported to Cheyenne County Hospital in critical condition. Both were later pronounced dead. No further information on the deadly accident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the fatal crash is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time.
Deadly Rollover Accidents in Kansas
The experience of riding in a car when it rolls can be quite traumatic. You can be severely hurt if you are ejected from the vehicle, leaving you shocked and likely with serious injuries. A total of 7,640 vehicle occupants lost their lives in rollover crashes in the United States in 2021 alone. Unrestrained passengers were responsible for most of these deaths. About 85 percent of rollovers that result in fatalities involve just one automobile, with the remaining 15 percent involving two or more vehicles. On the road, top-heavy cars are far more prone to overturn, and some have attributed the popularity of these vehicles to the rising rate of rollovers nationwide.
