Newton, KS (May 27, 2024) – On Sunday, May 26, there were multiple injuries reported after a rear-end collision in the Newton area. The accident took place on Interstate 135 near K-196 that afternoon around 3:35 p.m. Local reports indicated that there was significant traffic on the interstate due to an over-sized load that was stopped near mile marker 26.
Local reports indicated that 21-year-old Kandace L. Broussard of Lincoln, NE, was driving a 2015 GMC Terrain in the left lane. At the same time, 41-year-old Joshua B. Burkholder of Hays was headed north in a 2016 Ford Fusion in the right lane. Burkholder made a lane change to avoid slowing traffic and crashed into the rear of the GMC. Emergency crews were rushed to the scene to provide aid to the involved parties. Burkholder, Brousard, and a passenger in the GMC, 49-year-old Jenefer M. Bromm also from Lincoln, were transported by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center Hospital for treatment. No additional information on the accident is currently available.
Our thoughts are with Kandace L. Broussard, Joshua B. Burkholder, Jenefer M. Bromm, and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Kansas Rear-end Collisions

On average, rear-end crashes result in 31.1 percent of all traffic injuries and 7.1 percent of all accident fatalities. These collisions are typically the result of irresponsible or distracted drivers who are unable to stop in time to avoid hitting another car.
