Merriam, KS (July 28, 2024) – A teenager from Olathe was killed while trying to assist at the scene of a separate crash outside of Merriam on Saturday, July 27. The deadly accident took place on Interstate 35 NB that afternoon around 2 p.m. Local reports indicated that 21-year-old Joselin M. Laynez Flores of Guatemala rear-ended a Chevrolet Equinox driven by 25-year-old Paula Baird of Kansas City.
Before the crash, a Honda CRV driven by a 17-year-old Spring Hill resident pulled over onto the shoulder. A passenger in the Honda, a 17-year-old Olathe resident, exited the vehicle to assist the pulled-over Chevy. The Olathe teen was running up to the Equinox when it was hit, and he was ultimately struck and killed. No further information on the deadly accident is currently available. Local law enforcement officials are handling the ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
