Emporia, KS (July 28, 2024) – A woman and infant were killed after a collision involving a commercial truck outside of Emporia on Saturday, July 27. The deadly accident was reported on the Kansas Turnpike near mile marker 134.4 late that afternoon around 3:10 p.m. Initial sources indicated that a semi-truck and a sport utility vehicle were traveling southbound on the highway at the time of the crash. 

Both vehicles collided for unknown reasons, and emergency responders were rushed to the scene. The truck driver, 39-year-old Stetson Cooley from North Little Pulas, AR, was not hurt in the accident, but the other driver, 44-year-old Guerrero Moreno Jr. of Wichita, was injured and transported by ambulance to Newman Regional Health for treatment. Two passengers, 42-year-old Erin Moreno of Wichita and an infant, suffered fatal injuries in the impact and were pronounced dead soon after the accident. Three juveniles in the SUV were also injured. The area was temporarily closed while emergency crews were present. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly accident is in progress.
