Scandia, KS - Trucker Dies in Collision on US-36

Scandia, KS (September 24, 2024) – On Monday, September 23, a truck driver was killed and others were injured after a collision in the Scandia area. The incident took place on US-36 near mile marker 230.7 late that night around 10:27 p.m. Local reports revealed that 38-year-old Andrew J. Pumphrey of Mankato was operating a Case IH tractor-trailer hauling some farm equipment traveling west on the highway at the time of the crash. 

At the same time, 62-year-old Casey E. A. Tate of Luray was also headed westbound in a 2016 Freightliner truck. Tate struck the other truck from behind, causing Pumphrey to enter a south ditch. Pumphrey was ejected from the vehicle in the impact. Emergency crews were rushed to the scene to provide aid to the involved parties. Pumphrey sustained fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead. Tate and another passenger in the rig, 46-year-old Michelle H. Hauger of Luray, were hurt. Hauger was transported to Republic County Hospital for treatment. No further information on the crash is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident is in progress.
