Chanute, KS (October 27, 2024) – A driver was injured after a two-vehicle crash in the Chanute area on Saturday, October 26. The accident took place on KS-39 late that night around 8:12 p.m. on KS-39 NB near mile marker 30. Local reports revealed that a 17-year-old Humboldt resident was traveling eastbound on the highway in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck as 57-year-old Kenneth Eugene Colston of Chanute was riding a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle making a turn onto Harper Road.
The driver of the Chevy reportedly failed to yield at the intersection, and both vehicles collided. Emergency responders were rushed to the scene to provide aid to the involved parties. Colston was hurt and taken to the Kansas University Medical Center for the treatment of sustained injuries. The area was temporarily closed while emergency crews were present. No further information on the accident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Motorcycle Crashes in Kansas
No matter how fun it may be, riding a motorcycle is far from safe. Data show that motorcycle fatalities increased by almost 11 percent in a recent year, growing from 5,044 to 5,579 deaths. Motorcyclists are around 28 times more likely to die in a collision and four times more likely to get serious injuries in a crash compared to someone in a passenger car. Though they make up fewer than three percent of registered vehicles on American roads, motorcycles play a role in 14 percent of overall traffic deaths nationwide. It can be difficult to recover from serious injuries received in a motorcycle accident.
