Iola, KS (November 19, 2024) – A fatal crash occurred on US 169 Highway near milepost 64, approximately five miles south of US 54 Highway, on the evening of Monday, November 18. The accident was reported at 7:51 p.m. and involved two vehicles, resulting in one fatality.

According to investigators, a 2006 Toyota pickup truck, driven by 54-year-old Melany June Felt of Blue Mound, was traveling southbound when it crossed the center yellow line into the northbound lanes of traffic. In an attempt to avoid the collision, the driver of a northbound 2024 Freightliner semi truck steered to the right shoulder, but the Toyota struck the Freightliner on the shoulder of the highway. The Toyota came to rest in the roadway, while the Freightliner slid off the road and came to rest in the east ditch.

Tragically, the driver of the Toyota, Melany Felt, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the driver of the Freightliner, 53-year-old Christopher Lee Keathley of Parsons, Kansas, to the hospital with complaints of pain, though his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The area was temporarily closed as investigators worked at the scene. Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the crash, and further details will be released as the investigation progresses.

Truck accidents, especially involving large semi trucks, pose a significant risk to drivers on Kansas highways. These collisions can result in devastating consequences due to the sheer size and weight of commercial trucks. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports that while semi trucks make up a small portion of the vehicles on the road, accidents involving them are often more severe due to the extensive damage they cause.
