Overland Park, KS (January 28, 2025) – A rear-end collision occurred during morning traffic on I-35 Northbound at milepost 228, just south of 67th Street, at approximately 8:12 a.m. The accident involved a 1997 Acura CL and a 2021 Freightliner school bus. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the drivers or the ten passengers on the school bus.
The collision happened as traffic was slowing on the highway. The driver of the Acura, identified as Bobbi Jo Wilkin, 31, of Olathe, Kansas, reportedly struck the rear of the school bus driven by 77-year-old Thomas G. McCord of Prairie Village, Kansas. Both drivers were wearing safety restraints at the time of the incident. The vehicles sustained minor damage and did not require towing. Law enforcement officers from the Kansas Highway Patrol investigated the scene, and no road closures were reported. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
We are grateful that no one was injured in this accident, especially considering the presence of school bus passengers. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and safe driving practices.
Rear-End Collisions: A Common Cause of Traffic Incidents
Rear-end collisions are one of the most frequent types of car accidents on U.S. roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rear-end collisions account for nearly 29% of all car accidents. Factors such as distracted driving, following too closely, or sudden traffic slowdowns significantly contribute to these types of crashes. Even minor impacts can lead to long-term injuries or significant property damage, emphasizing the need for drivers to stay alert and maintain a safe following distance.
