Allen County, KS (November 18, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision occurred early Monday morning, November 18, at approximately 4:38 a.m., on 800th Road, about 0.8 miles north of Delaware and one mile west of Humboldt. The accident involved a northbound 1997 Dodge Dakota, driven by Eric Leon Guenther, 57, of Humboldt, and a southbound 2003 Ford Ranger, driven by Steven Yost, 53, also of Humboldt. According to officials, Guenther’s Dodge Dakota went into a spin and collided head-on with Yost’s Ford Ranger. Sadly, Guenther sustained fatal injuries and was transported to Allen County Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Yost suffered serious injuries and was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene to provide aid and secure the area. The Dodge Dakota was removed by Pearson Towing, while the Ford Ranger, which caught fire and burned, was also towed from the scene. The crash caused temporary road closures as authorities investigated the incident. The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation, and further details may emerge as the inquiry continues.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Eric Leon Guenther during this difficult time. We also extend our thoughts to Steven Yost and wish him a swift and complete recovery.
Dangers of Head-On Collisions in Kansas
Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of crashes, frequently resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that head-on collisions accounted for 58% of all passenger vehicle occupant deaths in 2022. Such accidents often occur suddenly and with great force, leaving little opportunity for drivers to avoid impact, even with proper safety measures in place.
