Belle Plaine, KS (August 5, 2024) – On Sunday, August 4, a woman was killed after a wrong-way collision outside of Belle Plaine. The deadly accident was reported on the Kansas Turnpike late that night around 6 p.m. Local reports revealed that a 2024 Toyota Crown driven by a 45-year-old Iowa man exited the Belle Plaine service area and entered the roadway traveling north in the southbound lanes.
The wrong-way driver collided head-on with a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by 36-year-old Colby Choate of Marshall, OK. The impact caused the Ford to overturn. The Explorer then hit two other vehicles following the initial crash. The Iowa man driving the Toyota Crown was transported to a local hospital for the treatment of sustained injuries. No other injuries were reported in the collision. The roadway was closed in both directions while emergency responders were present. No further information on the accident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is in progress.
