Elwood, KS (February 24, 2024) – On Wednesday afternoon, February 21, there were confirmed injuries after a train hit a motor vehicle in the Elwood area. The accident was reported near the crossing of 15th Street and Vermont Street that afternoon at around 1:03 p.m. Local reports indicated a 2008 Honda CR-V was heading southbound as it crossed a set of railroad tracks.
The Honda was hit by an oncoming Union Pacific train. The driver of the vehicle was transported to Mosaic Life Care Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO, for treatment of sustained injuries. The driver was later identified as Robert L. Shultz of Elwood.
A juvenile was also in the CR-V at the time of the crash. Initial reports did not reveal any information on their condition. No one on board the train was hurt in the accident. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident is being handled by local law enforcement officials.
