Dangers of Wrong-Way Accidents in Kansas

Jefferson County, KS – Two Killed in Early Morning Head-On Collision on K-4

Wrong-way driving accidents, like this one, are among the most catastrophic types of collisions and often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high speeds and direct impact involved. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), wrong-way crashes account for approximately 300 to 400 fatalities annually in the United States, representing a sobering reminder of the dangers drivers face on the road.

Most wrong-way incidents are caused by preventable factors such as impaired driving, where alcohol or drug consumption impairs a driver’s ability to make safe decisions, or distractions that divert attention from the road. Confusion, particularly in unfamiliar areas or poorly marked roadways, also plays a significant role, with drivers sometimes inadvertently entering highway off-ramps in the wrong direction.
