Lansing, KS (June 13, 2024) – Two people were injured after a multi-vehicle collision in the Lansing area on Wednesday, June 12. The incident was reported at the intersection of Mary Street and US-73 around 9 a.m. Local reports indicated that four vehicles collided at the scene.
It was later revealed that a 2016 Honda Odyssey driven by 39-year-old Megan N. Champlin of Kansas City, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 35-year-old Lucas L. Brin of Leavenworth, and a 2015 Ram 1500 driven by 60-year-old David L. Yochim of Leavenworth were stopped at a red light. It was then that 75-year-old Jack C. O’Neal of Leavenworth was driving a 2011 GMC Sierra when he experienced a medical episode. This caused the van to crash into the back of the Chevy pickup. Emergency crews were rushed to the scene. O’Neal was hurt and transported by ambulance to Providence Medical Center. Champlin was transferred to St. John’s Medical Center for the treatment of sustained injuries. No further information on the incident is currently available.
Our thoughts are with Jack C. O’Neal, Megan N. Champlin, and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Rear-end Crashes in Kansas
On American roadways, rear-end crashes are extremely common, and unless you keep your eyes trained on the rear-view mirror, you never know when you can be struck from behind by a careless driver. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in a recent year, rear-end collisions made up 32.5 percent of all motor vehicle crashes, and these crashes account for 7.1 percent of all accident fatalities and 31.1 percent of all traffic injuries on average. Usually, careless or distracted drivers who are unable to stop in time to prevent colliding with another car are to blame for these accidents.
