Newton, KS (August 25, 2024) – According to authorities who responded to the scene of the incident, an investigation has been opened after the site of a fatal wreck was found in South-Central Kansas over the weekend.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says that the discovery of the scene of a fatal crash around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, has resulted in an ongoing death investigation with the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol. The Sheriff’s Office indicated that it received a call that a red 2011 Chevrolet Silverado had been discovered by witnesses near the Highway 50 and Interstate 135 interchange, south of Newton. A man was apparently found deceased inside.
Investigators noted that positive identification of the driver remains pending; however, the registered owner of the truck is listed as Jonathan Clayton, 42, of Peabody. Law enforcement officials said an autopsy has been scheduled as the investigation remains ongoing. No further information on the accident is currently available, and it’s unclear if anyone else was hurt, but officers asked that any other witnesses to the collision step forward as soon as possible.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with any injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Deadly Vehicle Crashes in Kansas
Every day, drivers in Kansas travel through a lot of intersections. Statistics indicate that there is a higher chance of crashes in these areas of the road. A high number of drivers run stop signs and red lights, which raises the possibility of collision with an approaching vehicle.
In fact, an estimated 33% of the 700,000 collisions at stop-sign-controlled crossings annually involve injuries. According to statistics, major car accidents typically occur near an intersection.
Usually, the negligent driver fails to yield the right-of-way. Since they are responsible for more than half of all accidents in the nation that result in serious injuries and about 20% of traffic fatalities, intersection crashes and those along major highways are among the worst on the road.
