Red Light Crashes in Kansas
The AAA Foundation reports that 28 percent of fatal intersection collisions occur as a result of running a red light each year. More than half of these fatalities were passengers or occupants of other vehicles. In 2021, red-light-running collisions claimed the lives of 1,109 people in total. Half of these victims were cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers in other vehicles who were hit by drivers who ran red lights. An estimated 127,000 people were injured in crashes involving red-light runners that same year.
Interestingly, over 86 percent of drivers believe that running a red light is extremely risky, even though 28 percent of drivers acknowledged doing so in the previous 30 days.
