Tonganoxie, KS (September 14, 2024) – On Friday, September 13, there were confirmed injuries after a vehicle collision outside of Tonganoxie. The incident was reported on Interstate 70 EB near mile marker 206.8 at around 5:08 p.m. Local reports revealed that 18-year-old Ashlin Michael Williams of Pleasant Hill, IA was headed east in a 2018 Ford Ecosport when the driver slowed due to traffic on the interstate.
A 2003 Honda CRV driven by 20-year-old Tyler Joseph Fitzgerald of Shawnee slowed to avoid hitting the back of the Ford, but a 2024 Ford F-550 pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Bryan Escobar-Meza of Kansas City was unable to avoid hitting the back of the Honda. The impact pushed the CRV into the back of the Ecosport. Two occupants of the CRV, 21-year-old Andrew Joseph Hupp of Louisburg and 20-year-old Luca Kyle Fischer of Austin, TX, were injured in the impact. Both victims were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by ambulance for the treatment of sustained injuries. No further information on the crash is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident is in the hands of local law enforcement officials.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Kansas Rear-end Collisions
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rear-end collisions are the most common type of crash in the United States. People who aren’t paying attention to the road often miss the car in front of them and can’t stop in time to avoid an impact. About 1.7 million rear-end accidents happen on American roads every year. When people hit another car from behind, nearly 90 percent of the time, driver distraction is involved. More than 1,700 people are killed in rear-end crashes every year, and these accidents contribute to almost 85 percent of neck injuries.
